I have recently started a new class called Links. It is an elective when students go to their classroom an help other students who have autism. We go to our links classroom all week except on Thursdays when we go to Mrs. Skoutelas's room where we learn more about autism.
On the first day I went to the art room, where my link was for that hour, and introduced myself. We talked for a little bit and he told me his name. At first glance, I couldn't even tell he had autism. He was very friendly and had no problem having a conversation with me.
After the first couple days I started to notice his differences in the classroom from the other people around him. He is obsessed with star wars and trucks and that was all he talked about. Once he someone brought up one of these subjects he would talk about it for the next ten minutes. I had to learn how to act around him in order to not make him mad or offend him in any way. I also had to figure out ways to help him with his artwork that would make the best sense for him. There is still a lot of time left in the semester and I still have very much to learn about autism, but it has been a great start. Can you relate to this in any way or do you have any suggestions on how to interact with him?
